Kantai Collection (Kan Colle)

Nope, I haven’t played this game yet but supposedly it’s very popular now and even I can feel the heat of its popularity ^^;

There’ll be a Vita version next year and maybe that’s the one I would be playing.

I’m not sure why it’s very popular… is it the gameplay? The concept? (girls personifying Japanese battleships)? The characters? ^^;

Anyway, I bought the anthology comics from BOOK☆WALKER and so even though I haven’t played the game, I kinda get a sense on the popular characters.

So this post serves as a brief character introduction, unless you are already more well-versed about Kan Colle than me ^^;

So without further ado…

She is a very popular character (probably the most popular?) Supposedly she’s one of a kind (there isn’t another ship of the same class as her) and that she’s the fastest. She doesn’t have many friends and plays with her robots instead.

Kongou, Hiei, Haruna and Kirishima

021v2 022 023 024

Apparently for Japanese ships, when they build multiple ships of the same type, they are given a class name, and then the first ship will have the same name as the class name. So these 4 characters are of Kongou-class and the first character is named Kongou. Kongou seems to have foreigner’s accent, I guess it’s because she’s not built by Japanese (but her younger sisters are). These sisters are very popular, especially Kongou with that confident attitude. Haruna (the long gray hair) seems to be the second most popular, followed by Kirishima. The three younger sisters all seem to love their eldest sister.

Akagi and Kaga

006 007

Akagi is often used for promotional image. She is kind but eats a lot. In battles, she mentions something about pride. Kaga, while a quiet and serious type, adores Akagi. Kaga also likes to eat ice cream.

Tenryuu and Tatsuta

028 029

These two sisters are quite famous, I guess because of their unique look. Tatsuta, although looks kind on the outside, is supposedly sadistic on the inside. In a way they’re like Nana and Momo from To Love-Ru series.

Shoukaku and Zuikaku

amarecco0001 107

Another two sisters. Shoukaku is known to have extremely bad luck (I guess there’s a corresponding history to this) while Zuikaku on the other hand has extremely good luck. Shoukaku is often depicted to take lots of damages after battle while her sister is as clean as new.

She is of the Takao-class but is more famous than Takao herself. I guess you know why and she also has this funny phrase ‘Panpakapaan!’

Ikazuchi, Inazuma, Akatsuki and Hibiki

073 074 071 072

Ikazuchi and Inazuma are quite popular because apparently they are these twin sisters with contrasting personality (so they’re like Ram and Rom in Hyperdimension Neptunia series; Ikazuchi is the confident one). Akatsuki and Hibiki are of the same class but Ikazuchi and Inazuma seem to be more famous. Hibiki is also pretty popular and is known for getting a name change to Russian (I guess there’s a corresponding real life history to this).

She is famous too. Supposedly she is unsinkable or something.

She is the most famous of Sendai-class (there are 3 ships in total) She has this uncanny resemblance to Haruka Amami from Idolm@ster and also aims to become an idol (whenever you see a Kan Colle character posing in orange cloth, it’s probably her) ^^;

She appears quite a number of times. I guess she’s popular because one of her personalities is she’s insecure about her breast size. She’s one-of-a-kind like Shimakaze. In one of the stories, they befriend each other.

Fubuki, Hatsuyuki, Miyuki and Murakumo

011 013 014 015

There are many girls under Fubuki-class and Fubuki is often depicted as the main girl of Kan Colle. Besides her, Hatsuyuki, Miyuki and Murakumo also make quite a number of appearances as well.

For some reason, Ushio of Ayanami-class appears more often than the rest of her class (most probably because she has bigger breasts than most other Destroyer schoolgirls).

She is pretty popular as well. Her cap is her trademark. She speaks Kansai-ben.

Seems to be a strong-type character. In fact, she’s card no.1! There’s another strong-type character like her called Yamato, but Nagato seems to be the more popular one.

Kitakami and Ooi

020 019

They don’t seem to be sisters, but they are definitely yuri to each other. They seem pretty popular as well.

She is often depicted drunk. She is the character that tends to start parties.

So yeah, lots of characters, and there are actually a lot more, but these are the ones that tend to appear again and again in anthology comics… It’s pretty overwhelming to try to identify all of them, especially the many Destroyer characters (the Destroyers tend to be school girls and it’s tricky to differentiate them sometimes).

Yep, each of these girls is a personification of some real Japanese battleship. No fictional battleship involved!

Pretty interesting to read what actually happened to them in real life (hint: most of them were shot down and sunk if not scrapped ^^;)

    The main reason why it’s so popular is because it pulled off the same combo of girls and military machines in the same vein as Strike Witches and Girls Und Panzer, only this one is a free browser game and not an anime.

    Tried it myself, the game is a bit on the taxing side, pretty much a mix of classic Battleship and Nobunaga’s Ambition.

      I guess so. Always seems to be the winning combo, huh? ^^;

      Wow, you tried it? Is the game fun despite being taxing? Are you still playing it? Which characters are your fleets made up of? :D

    You’d be surprised how many military enthusiasts are out there who also belong with the moe lover crowd.

    Just touched it for a little bit, so all I have are the starters (have to check my account to see which specific units, haven’t played it in ages). Was able to finish one scenario but the preparations before starting a mission take quite a bit. You have to decide everything from fleet formation, launch units, escorts, equipment, carrier cargo machines, etc.

    It’s really more a numbers game than anything else.

    If the Vita version plays more like a pedestrian tactics game, then it’s a sure buy for me. Something along the lines of Moe Moe Daisensou will fit it to a tee.

      I see… Though not really military, I’m also a big fan of girls with guns such as Gunslinger Girl and Saikano X)

      I’m also pretty sure it’s a matter of time before Busou Shinki will have a game on Vita with better graphics and controls (the PSP version sold well I hope? ^^;)

      I see… Yep, supposedly the Vita game is not just a port X)

  3. OshareKeiji

    I’d like to think that as well, but Konami’s been a bit on the slow side with Busou Shinki these days. Case in point is the fact that the new figures they showcased back in Wonder Festival ’11 still haven’t been released up to now (the release intervals usually spanned about 6-7 months in the past). Given, BSBM Mk2 still has a (somewhat) healthy userbase in the Ad-Hoc Party scene, but there hasn’t been much activity from the maker side despite the slight hype bolstered by the anime.

    The only rays of hope now for machine and 2D girl lover gamers slated for Vita release is Kan Colle and Girls

        Lol ^^;

        I might get Girls Und Panzer as well. Preorder has already started at AmiAmi, it seems… And the limited edition preorder is already sold out. Crazy! XD

  4. OshareKeiji

    Figured as much. The anime has ended but a lot of places still have GnP events and stuff.

    Getting the model kits (as well as the Miho nendo with the Panzer IV turret add-on) was no joke either.

    Personally though, I might be getting the DL version for both games. That way stock won’t be an issue.

    1. Helu Post author

      Ah, yep, DL version might be better; don’t have to keep switching game cards especially if KanColle Kai still turns out to be stamina-based games ^^
