Oh yeah, there’s something I forgot to mention recently, and yeah, the manga version of Umineko No Naku Koro Ni has finally come to an end.
Umineko was a ‘doujin’ PC visual novel series comprising 8 Episodes, each Episode being quite a long read. It was released in comic conventions and stuffs.
Then it was remade into 2 PS3 games, which was quite appropriate because for Episodes 5-8, it’s actually called Umineko ‘Chiru’.
They ported the games to PSP as well, but only the first PS3 game, into 2 PSP games… (so 1st PSP game is Episode 1+2, 2nd is Episode 3+4). It’s just like the anime (which I have never watched btw), they stopped at Episode 4.
The first manga version of Umineko, for Episode 1, was released in June 2008. Since then, different authors draw for different Episodes (although some do multiple Episodes) (The author of Episode 1 and 8 are the same). 7 years later, August 2015, the last volume of Episode 8 has been released.
Episode 8 manga in particular is quite special, because it made clear some of the things that were only hinted in the game version. It clarified certain stuffs and made some additions (and that’s why Episode 8 has the max number of volumes – at 9). I guess it’s for fans who complained that Episode 8 (game version) didn’t reveal everything.
I kinda wished they would do a re-release of the Umineko PS3 games, into PS4/PSVita, ideally into one package (just like they did with Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni; Umineko’s spiritual predecessor). If they want to put some additions, I can think of one; remake Umineko Tsubasa as well. Umineko Tsubasa is a compilation of side stories and supplements in doujin visual novel format. It has manga version, but never converted to professional quality game.
But yeah, Umineko No Naku Koro Ni, one of the most special stories I’ve ever read. There probably won’t be anything quite like it in the foreseeable future, just like Metal Gear series, and I’m pretty sure it would have won various writing awards had it come from stateside (instead of being a ‘cult classic’ in Japan).
(Actually, Umineko also has light novel format, latest release is Episode 7 Part 1 of 2. But I don’t know if I want to read those, not when you have the game ^^;) (So yeah, Umineko… has all 3 formats adaptations; manga, light novel and anime)
